St. Andrew's
The late 14th century church, dedicated to God in honour of St Andrew, stands at the heart of the old village of Langford. Sunday worship is at 9.15am (9.30am on the 3rd Sunday of the month). Last year, medieval wall paintings were discovered during preparations for redecoration and the PCC is seeking advice on their possible restoration. The Sunday School meets in the Church Hall during the first part of each service. A Searchlights group (for children 5-9 years) meets every Friday of term time at 3.30pm in the church or hall. The Vicar and congregation wait to welcome you. Church Open for visitors The church is open for visitors on alternative Sunday afternoons from 2:00p.m to 4:00p.m commencing Easter Day. Medieval Wall Paintings uncovered The church architect has contacted a firm of experts to give a report on some early 14th Century wall paintings discovered as the north aisle was being prepared for redecoration. The expert conservator, Tobit Curties, of Cambridge has visited the church for an initial investigation. A return visit from Tobit to undertake a more detailed survey of two large areas of the north aisle wall and prepare a detailed and costed scheme for possible uncovering and restoration of these areas has taken place. The remainder of the wall will be colour-washed so that further restoration can be more easily undertaken at some future date. In January 2007, the PCC decided not to proceed with the uncovering of wall paintings on the north wall except for the consecration Cross at the back. Priority will be given to the completion of the re-decoration of the church. New Doors New doors have been installed at the main entrance from the south porch into the south aisle. These doors, a memorial gift, are made of English oak with glass panels. The panels are etched with the cross of St Andrew and the St Albans Diocesan coat of arms. Friday Morning Coffee – You will be most welcome to drop-in for coffee and excellent cakes any Friday morning in the Church Hall. They start at about 10.30am and is staffed by adults with learning difficulties in our area. Your support would really encourage them! We are still creating content for various aspects of the St.Andrew's and its' life. Links to completed features appear at the top of the screen. We hope in due course to be able to provide of virtual tour of the building but need a little more time. Please call in often!
