Jim Dickson

Dear Friends,

With the leaves now falling from the trees, the mild sunshine combined with unusually warm weather and very little rain has given us a pleasant Autumn. Is this a warning for what we can expect in the forthcoming months with more extreme temperatures?

So once again we find ourselves in that period before Advent when traditionally we have snow, cold winds and frost leading of course to the most important Christian Celebration - the Birth of Christ - Christmas.

Before then, however, on Sunday 11th December we would be very pleased to have your company in church at 6pm to enjoy the carols, some mulled wine and perhaps a mince pie.

On Christmas Eve at 6pm there will be a combined Christingle and Crib Service then, later that same evening, Midnight Mass at 11.15pm; and on Christmas Day, the Family Communion will be held at 9.30am.

To more topical and future matters, I can report that our Priest in Charge, the Revd Sue Groom, has recently been appointed Diocesan Director of Ordinands while still remaining as Priest in Charge in the Benefice of Henlow and Langford. I am sure that you will all join with me in offering her our congratulations.

The Friends Group was formed at the beginning of this year with the objective to overcome the shortfall of annual income when compared with the annual overall running costs of the church. To date we have contributed the sum of £758.54 from two events viz: the Quiz Night, £221; and £537.54 from the Jazz Concert. Looking to next year, it would be very interesting to hear from any member of the Friends Group of fresh ideas for fundraising. Meanwhile we are looking at a possible musical show based on the history of working boats on the river, a wine tasting evening and the Vauxhall Male Voice Choir.

Finally, though the festive season is still some weeks away, I do hope you will make a point of noting the dates and times of the foregoing celebrations when hopefully you will be able to join us in church.

The Season's Greetings,

Jim Dickson, Chairman,
November 2011
